Shine Your Light
Winter is easing in as we get closer the shortest and darkest day of the year. December 21 welcomes the winter solstice, the celebration of light. From here the amount of daylight begins to increase a little each day until it reaches its peak at the summer solstice in June. The holiday lights wrapped around homes, trees, and businesses bring us the sensations of warmth, comfort, and joy on these dark days.
In the yoga community there is a traditional greeting expressed on meeting or parting known as ‘Namaste’. The gesture represents the belief that there is a Divine spark within each of us. With folded hands and a slight bow the word ‘Namaste’ is spoken between two or more people. Translated: the light that resides inside of me, sees and honors the light that is inside of you.
You arrived on the planet with that unique light inside of you. Can you sense it within yourself or see it in others? Observing or participating in an act of kindness, love, or generosity ignites those flames within us and reminds us that we are connected to it. It being source, the Universe, God or whichever word resonates for you. Can you hear it whispering to you, trying to help you see your innate gifts, talents, and purpose? It’s telling you that they need to be shared, that it is time for you to shine your light.
Shining our light occurs in those moments when we are completely present, with a willingness to open our heart and consciously expand our vibration. They are moments of love, of standing in our truth, of fully stepping into who we really are.
Awareness of the people and the experiences that fuel our light is critical. We must consciously choose to spend time in these experiences and with these people so we can lift our own vibration. We will be unable to shine our lights brightly if our energy is spent or if we haven’t been taking care of our own needs first. So what works for you: time in nature, a yoga practice, meditation? Sometimes it is our acts of service to our families, our friends, or even to compete strangers that fuel us.

This group of conscious artists encourage us to shine our light so brightly that others can find their way out of the darkness. Joni Mitchell invites us to shine our light on the broken systems and structures on the planet. She challenges us to shine our light on the person who cuts us off in traffic and the corrupt politician, reminding us that the exact same light that resides in each of us also resides in them. Shawn’s song ‘Shimmer’ is about how when we arrive on the planet (as a baby) we are the closest to God that we will ever be during our human experience. As we get immersed into society, the teachings and fears of our parents, our culture, our systems and structures get passed down to us and can begin dimming our light – in some cases even trying to extinguish it.
The rest of these songs are inviting you to shine your light through your writing, painting, music, through the physical, tangible manifestation, in whatever way creative life force energy seeks to flow through you. Each time that you fully step into who you really are, each time you radiate your light out into the world; you give others permission to shine their lights. Imagine the world we will live in when each of us step into this aspect of ourselves.
